Sony A7R VI Introduces Powerful 67MP Stacked Sensor
The biggest change inside the Sony A7R VI is the switch to a fully stacked 67MP sensor. Earlier A7R models used backside-illuminated sensors, but Sony now uses faster stacked technology for quicker readout performance.
The upgrade significantly reduces rolling shutter distortion. Photographers can now use the electronic shutter more confidently during fast-moving scenes.
Sony also boosted RAW burst shooting speeds from 10fps to 30fps with blackout-free continuous shooting. That is a major jump for a camera with such high resolution.
The camera now includes a new pre-capture mode as well. Users can save up to 15 frames before fully pressing the shutter button. This feature helps photographers capture unpredictable action moments more easily.

Autofocus And Image Quality Receive Big Improvements
Sony heavily upgraded autofocus performance on the Sony A7R VI. The camera now features a 759-point phase-detect autofocus system with 94% frame coverage.
The autofocus system works in lighting conditions as low as EV-6 and supports apertures up to F22.
Sony also improved AI subject recognition. The camera can detect eyes, faces, bodies, vehicles, birds, insects, and animals more accurately than before.
The system can even continue tracking subjects when their faces briefly disappear behind objects or crowds.
Image quality improvements also play a major role in the new camera. Sony claims up to 16 stops of dynamic range in RAW mode, which should help preserve highlights and shadow details in difficult lighting situations.
The company also expanded its Dynamic Range Optimizer system for better exposure handling during backlit scenes.
Another notable change is Sony’s move away from traditional uncompressed RAW files. The camera now focuses on lossless compressed RAW formats that reduce file sizes without sacrificing detail.

Sony Pushes The A7R VI Further Into Video Production
The Sony A7R VI also receives several major video upgrades. Thanks to the faster stacked sensor, the camera can now record 8K video at up to 30fps with reduced rolling shutter issues.
Users can also shoot 4K video at 60fps and 120fps using oversampled footage for sharper results.
Sony introduced a new dual-gain system that improves low-light video quality while reducing image noise. The company also upgraded stabilization performance for smoother handheld recording while walking.
The internal microphone system now reduces unwanted fan noise and lens operation sounds more effectively.
Sony additionally improved the electronic viewfinder with brighter HDR support and wider color accuracy. Illuminated buttons and a redesigned grip also improve usability during nighttime shooting sessions.
The camera includes a larger battery with roughly 17% more capacity than earlier models.
Sony says the A7R VI is now available for pre-order with shipments expected to begin in June 2026. With its combination of speed, resolution, and AI-assisted features, the camera may quickly become one of Sony’s most advanced hybrid mirrorless systems yet.
